Authors: MARICEL T. GUBAT, MED KRIZHA S. ROMERO, LOVELY CATHERINE JOYCE E. IMPLAMADO, MARGARETTE PAULA S. BALTAZAR, EURICA ISAIAH O. DORADO, ALIJA GLAIEHNN R. MANALILI, JHERIMAE LEE V. PAGUIA, SALMAN L. MALIC

Abstracts: Background: As the advancement of today’s technology, the important use of the school science laboratory has been greatly needed over the past years especially for the STEM students. Although other studies have gone over the importance of science laboratories, this paper presents a clear understanding of the lived experience of grade 12 students under the STEM strand in conducting experiments in the school science laboratory. Methods: This qualitative study utilized the phenomenological approach to fully understand the lived experiences of the Grade 12 STEM students concerning the central question: “How do laboratory experiments reinforce the academic development of STEM students?” The necessary data set was obtained through semi-structured interviews with twenty-seven (27) questions and formulated themes from the responses of the participants. Findings: Findings have shown the lived experiences of the Grade 12 Senior High School STEM students in conducting experiments in the school Science Laboratory. It comprises three major themes with three sub-themes each: Cognitive Application with the sub-themes Critical Thinking, Outcome-Based Approach, and Experiential Learning; Affective Implication with the sub-themes Personal Satisfaction, Collaboration, and Responsibility; and Psychomotor Intensification with the sub-themes Manipulation, Proficiency, and Adaptation. Conclusion: The students’ learning experiences in the school science laboratory had been impactful in the development of the three domains of learning in relation to Bloom’s Taxonomy. Students are able to nurture their cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills through the conduct of laboratory experiments. Recommendations: The researchers recommend that laboratory experimentation be given more emphasis in any Science course more than other performance tasks. To fill in the gaps in this study, it is suggested that the future researchers diversify the respondents’ profile by locale, age, and strand. In addition, the researchers recommended conducting further analysis of the students’ learning experiences on conducting science laboratory experiments.

THE INFLUENCE OF THE DOUBLE REDUCTION POLICY ON ELEMENTARY AND MIDDLE SCHOOLS IN CHINA SINCE 2021

Authors: LI BING

Abstracts: In 2021, China proposed the “Double Reduction” strategy. This approach’s goal is to decrease students’ stress related to schoolwork and after-school coaching. Presently, nearly a year after the fact, numerous nearby legislatures have implemented this strategy with their schooling arrangements. “Double Reduction” appears to have diminished the tension between families and students, as indicated by current internet-based assessments. Nonetheless, due to the “Double Reduction” strategy, students can’t procure information through after-school life as in the past, and metropolitan youngsters, particularly those from double-income families, need supplemental instruction from parents, as a rule. How do these vacuums influence students? Significant data were gathered through interviews and reviewing writing on the Web. In light of this useful information, this paper breaks down whether students get proper home schooling to make up for the loss of their ability to learn through extracurricular coaching and after-school schoolwork. Quantitative methodology was used to analyze the influencing factors in the effectiveness in the implementation of the Double Reduction Policy. The findings indicated that there were multiple significant but weak correlations between the combination of independent variables (familiarizing ideas, generating knowledge, reviewing knowledge, producing quality) and the dependent variable (teaching strategy). It was found that due to the absence of sufficient after-school schoolwork and after-school mentoring, some extremely successful students might in any case perform at a high scholastic level (upper and elementary grades), yet lower-accomplishing students’ scholastic performance turned out to be lower because of the absence of parental discipline.

Abstracts: A High Risk Pregnancy (HRPA) is one in which one or more factors expose the mother and/or the foetus to a very high probability of morbidity or mortality before, during or after childbirth. The best management of this type of pregnancy requires scrupulous compliance with the so-called HRPA which is essentially a preventive method. To assess the impact of the HRPA on maternal mortality in order to know if this approach can significantly reduce the current maternal death rates, a prospective and analytical study was conducted at the Central Hospital of Yaounde over a period of 10 months, from February to November 1998. During the study, 96 parturients were received and followed up until postpartum, at the HRPA Program and 2,647 deliveries were also recorded at the Main Maternity, making a total of 2,743 deliveries. Grand multiparity was the most encountered risk, with 29.17%. Complications from abortions were the most common cause of death at 28.57%. Proper application of the HRPA approach could, in fact, reduce the maternal mortality rate by up to 53.57%.

ATTITUDE OF THE TEACHERS AND STUDENTS IN CODE-SWITCHING IN ENGLISH-INSTRUCTED SUBJECTS

Authors: AGNES JUMARANG PARMA, MAED

Abstracts: This study aimed to find out the attitude of the teachers and students in Code-switching in English-instructed Class. Here, the researcher utilized quantitative research. The data were gathered through a researcher-made questionnaire, the data were gathered through a google form. There were 14 teachers and 62 students who served as the respondents of the research. Based on the data gathered, the teachers- respondents strongly agreed that they code- switch from English to Filipino to explain clear concepts and ideas, to better expound complex topics, to get responses from students, to clarify the lessons from the students and it helps the teachers to convey or explain meaning easily to the students. Meanwhile, student- respondents, strongly agreed that usage of Filipino in English classes allows the respondents in expressing ideas that cannot express in English and code-switching helps them improve their communication skills. Meanwhile, in determining if there’s a significant difference between the attitude of the teachers and students about code-switching, it was found out that there is a significant difference in the attitude of the teachers and attitude of the students in Code-switching in English- instructed subjects. Therefore, it was recommended that, the school administration may address this by providing plans on how the students can still see the essence of English and strengthen the utilization of English in English-instructed subjects. Also, the school administration should acknowledge the fact that even if their students are Senior High School, students need time to develop the use of English in class. Moreover, the English Coordinator may devise a plan that will address the improvement of the English fluency of the Senior High School students. For instance, students are encouraged to ask and answer English in the English-instructed subjects but for the situation that they cannot express themselves, it will be the time for them to speak Filipino.
