Authors: DR. R.PUSHPAVALLI, S.SURENDARA KUMAR, B.SURENDHAR, R.RAJAGANAPATHI

Abstracts: Poaching has a huge imbalance in the ecosystem, due to poaching many endangered species are now on the brink of extinction. Even with all the addition of extra manpower to curb the poaching activities and safeguard the forest, it is still inefficient owing to the large and dense forest area. A framework of IoT based Anti- poaching and Fire alarm System (IAFS) is proposed with combining different types of sensors such as temperature sensor, smoke sensor and Light Dependent Resistors (LDR) sensor. The proposed IoT primarily based on IAFS includes Arduino board which collects all the parameters from those sensors and relays the facts to the cloud. The cloud platform continuously monitors unit’s devices the statistics and sends an alert notification to the forest officials whenever there can be any intrusion detected. The aim of this proposed work is to be able to remotely monitor forest cover and poaching of wild animals. The proposed IAFS enables forest officials to monitor the forest area and collect data of any intrusion remotely. In addition to this, the proposed work shows better performance in the aspect of poaching than other existing system.

Authors: SETH OKYERE-DANKWA1, MENSAH SITTI2, SOLOMON ANAB3

Abstracts: There has been a significant change in the communication industry for the past decade. Customers taste has changed and the deregulation in the industry brought about more competition. There is now much concern, talk and discussions on Triple Play that is video, voice and data services over an integrated network. Meanwhile most of the networks being used today are designed with data application in mind. Data being non-real time application is not affected by delay, drop and jitter as a result of congestion. The impact on delay, drop and jitter has negative effect on video and voice being transmitted over network. This Study discusses the characteristics of data, voice and video facilities and their network requirements. The Study also looks at the effective, efficient and more reliable network facilities that will support the convergence of voice, video and data. The Study will finally touch on the management and security issues of the network which support the convergence.

RAPID DETECTION AND QUANTIFICATION OF CYANIDE IN CASSAVA (MANIHOT ESCULENTA CRANTZ) VIA UV/VIS EXTINCTION SPECTROSCOPY

Authors: RONALD SALIMA, MALAMA CHISANGA

Abstracts: Cassava (Manihot esculenta crantz) is a cyanogenic edible plant tuber which is usually considered as a staple food in many developing countries. Cassava is often characterized by the presence of a cyanogenic glycoside linamarin, whose enzymatic hydrolysis produces hydrogen cyanide (HCN) as a byproduct. HCN is poisonous to humans when ingested in more than acceptable amounts; hence, rapid detection of HCN is needed to prevent the effects of this toxic compound in people who rely on cassava meals. In this study, cassava samples obtained from two different regions of Zambia were investigated to probe the levels of cyanide in processed and raw (i.e., soaked and unsoaked) cassava samples. The results show that the concentration of cyanide in cassava samples varied with geographical location, as well as the age of cassava plant and processing methods. The highest concentration of 12.033 mg/mL of cyanide was recorded in unsoaked cassava samples collected from Luampa District, whilst the lowest cyanide level of 3.1136 mg/mL was detected in soaked cassava harvested from Mansa, suggesting that soaking of cassava reduced the amount of cyanide concentration as observed in this study. In virtually all cases, the concentration of cyanide detected in original cassava tubers from Luampa were higher than the WHO recommended level (10 mg of HCN/kg), irrespective of the implemented processing strategy (soaked vs unsoaked).
