Authors: KYLE PATRICK ODARVE, MICHAEL KYLE AUDREX V. EXALTACION, VEE JAY B. MARQUEZ, CHERYL MOANA MARIE FEDELIS, DAISY JOY C. CARIN, RN, MAN

Abstracts: In the realm of healthcare, where the focus extends beyond individual well-being to encompass the health of entire communities, Community Health Nursing arises as an essential aspect. Individuals, families, demographic groups, and communities rely on these committed healthcare professionals to promote health, prevent disease, and facilitate recovery. However, in the Philippines, specifically in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas (GIDA) like Butuan City, community health nurses grapple with formidable challenges. The study aimed to develop a deeper understanding of the lived experiences of community health nurses assigned in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas for health in Butuan City. Purposive sampling was used which included 15 Community Health Nurses in 12 Barangays in Butuan City. The study utilized a qualitative design through interviews, specifically, phenomenological, through the use of an interview questionnaire. The research delves into the lived experiences of CHNs working in GIDAs, aiming to understand their specific challenges characterized by constrained healthcare access and resource scarcity, and how they collaboratively navigate these obstacles to deliver adaptable healthcare services that cater to a wide spectrum of life stages, encompassing infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and older adulthood. This study emphasizes the necessity of collaboration among multiple stakeholders which are critical to enhancing healthcare delivery, assisting nurses in underprivileged regions, and promoting GIDA communities' overall health results, building a more equitable and resilient healthcare system.

POTENTIAL OF RHIZOBIUM INOCULATION AND ARBUSCULAR MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI TO IMPROVE YIELD OF COWPEA GENOTYPES IN AFGOYE DISTRICT, LOWER SHABELLE REGION, SOMALIA

Authors: SALAD MOHAMED DAHIR, DAVID MUSHIMIYIMANA, JOHN MUCHIRI

Abstracts: Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata L.) is an important legume crop in sub-Saharan Africa grown for leaf, grain and fodder. The decline in soil fertility limits cowpea production and farmers heavily use inorganic fertilizers to compensate for the lost soil nutrients. Unfortunately, frequent use of inorganic fertilizers leads to environmental problems including salinity, nutrient runoff, contamination of water bodies, as well as being non-renewable. The aim of this study was to determine the positive effects of Rhizobial inoculants and Arbuscular Mycorrhizal fungi on growth and yield of cowpea, to check if these environmentally friendly bio-fertilizers can be a good alternative to inorganic fertilizers. Field experiment was conducted in Afgoye district, Somalia, to evaluate the effect of rhizobium inoculation and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi as bio-fertilizers with or without mineral fertilizer (NPK) on yield of two Kenyan cowpea varieties: Machakos 66, Katumani 80 and a Somali local landrace. Treatments consisted of T1: Control (zero fertilizer), T2: Rhizobium (250 g for 15 kg of seeds), T3: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (3 g per plant), T4: NPK fertilizer (2 g per plant), T5: Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds)+NPK fertilizer (1 g per plant), T6: Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (1.5 g per plant)+NPK fertilizer (1 g per plant), T7: Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds)+Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (1.5 g per plant)+NPK fertilizer (1 g per plant) arranged in a randomized complete block design with 3 replicates per treatment. Data collected on fresh weight, dry weight of the leaves and grain yield were subjected to analysis of variance using SPSS. Significant means were separated using Duncan multiple range test at 95% level of confidence. Results showed that the sole NPK (2 g per plant) followed by Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds)+Mycorrhiza (1.5 g per plant)+NPK (1 g per plant) recorded the highest fresh weight (665.8 g per plot, 643.8 g per plot) and dry weight of leaves (97.3 g per plot, 97.2 g per plot). Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds)+Mycorrhiza (1.5 g per plant)+NPK (1 g per plant) achieved the highest grain yield (1253.5 kg ha-1) followed by sole NPK (2 g per plant) and Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds) +NPK (1 g per plant) with 1225.7 kg ha-1 and 1202.2 kg ha-1, respectively. The control recorded the lowest grain yield (998.8 kg ha-1). M66 variety produced 440.6 kg ha-1 and 74.7 kg ha-1 higher grain yield than that recorded in the local landrace and K80 variety, respectively. The local landrace achieved the highest fresh and dry weight of leaves. Based on the findings of this study, combination of Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds) + Mycorrhiza (1.5 g per plant)+NPK (1 g per plant) followed by Rhizobium (125 g for 15 kg of seeds)+NPK (1 g per plant) improved both leaves and grain yield of cowpea thus can be used to complement the use of mineral fertilizers in cowpea production. Further studies on effect of Rhizobium inoculation and Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on the nutritional quality of cowpea produced should be conducted.

PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ LEVELS OF REFLECTIVE WRITING THROUGH WEBLOGS

Authors: JOY D. TALENS

Abstracts: One medium to express students’ reflection in the teacher education program is through weblogs found in various social media platforms. Weblog as medium for students’ reflection has been found to have a positive impact in the teaching – learning process. Thus, this study investigated the contents of the pre – service teachers’ reflective writings through weblogs and their levels of reflection in the course Teaching Geography and Natural Resources. Each paragraph or occurrence in the weblogs were analyzed through the identified codes. These reflections were distributed across levels of reflection. Although there were few occurrences categorized as non – reflective writing, still it is worthy to consider that these weblogs are leading to the next level, which is the beginning level of reflective writing. Thus, a rubric to determine the reflective level of students using blogs and procedures on weblogging as requirements for reflecting thinking is being proposed.

METALINGUAL ANALYSIS OF DALAGUETNON POETRY

Authors: LEO CARLO D. CASINILLO, MA. CRISTILINA A. MONTAñEZ, EDD

Abstracts: The utilization of local literature in English teaching, particularly poetry, creates a sense of familiarity among students. This connection helps students decode meanings; and ultimately, to write. However, aversion to poetry among learners in Dalaguetnon, Cebu, Philippines still persists. This is due to the utilized poems’ foreign content. Using Greenblat’s New Historicism, Barthes’ Connotation-Denotation, and Knickerbocker’s Sense Experience of Imagery as lenses, this study investigates the relatable Dalaguetnon ways of life and living reflected in four Dalaguetnon poems for utilization in the Creative Writing classes. Particularly, it will look into the poems’ imaginary transaction, imageries, and poetic diction. The research design is descriptive as it utilizes discourse analysis that is qualitative in nature. The study concludes that Dalaguetnon poems reflect the culture and heritage of the people. They contain imageries that are mostly kinesthetic and sensual. Moreover, the poems’ diction reveals the Dalaguetnons’ high regard for women; their selfless idea of love; the high value they invest to friendships; and their strong devotion to the Almighty. The study recommends that local poetry be integrated in Creative Writing classes since they contain relatable cultural aspects that can develop English language proficiency, literary writing, and cultural enrichment among Dalaguetnon learners.
